12th Jun 2024

Bourne Education Trust is delighted to announce that West Ewell Primary has been rated 'good' overall by Ofsted inspectors, with 'outstanding' judgements for behaviour and attitudes, personal development and the early years provision at the school.

Inspectors praised the school's positive ethos and values, stating: "Pupils have a clear understanding of the school's values of respect, resilience, reflection, responsibility and resourcefulness. They work hard to show these values. Pupils demonstrate this through their excellent conduct and their exceptional attitudes to learning. Pupils feel happy and safe in the school."

Throughout the report, the quality of education was highlighted as a key strength. "Teachers have very high expectations of pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Staff design a range of engaging activities and match them to pupils' individual needs thoughtfully. This ensures that pupils achieve well." It further commended the curriculum, adding: "Leaders know their pupils well. They use this information to plan an ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum that meets the needs of pupils including those with SEND. Pupils learn important skills and knowledge including a rich vocabulary."

Beyond academics, the school's nurturing environment and outstanding personal development were applauded. Inspectors were impressed by the "high-quality pastoral support" which "ensures that pupils feel that they are looked after exceptionally well." Behaviour and attitudes were judged to be outstanding, with the report stating: "The school is a calm and purposeful place, where pupils' conduct is excellent." Additionally, it noted: "The school's provision for pupils' personal development is exceptional. Pupils have a mature and sensitive understanding of diversity” and “the school offers opportunities to develop pupils' skills and talents…They enjoy a wide range of clubs and activities that are open to all."

Finally looking to the school’s offer for its youngest pupils, West Ewell’s early years provision was noted as another area of excellence too. Achieving the highest rating, inspectors commented: "Pupils participate in lessons excitedly and purposefully. This starts in nursery where children show exceptional levels of concentration for their age."

Alex Russell, BET CEO said: "I congratulate everyone at West Ewell for this well-deserved report. Mia and her team work tirelessly to provide an exceptional learning environment for their children and we are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the strengths of this wonderful school community.”
