BET schools celebrate Deaf Awareness Week

9th May 2023

Each year the first week of May marks Deaf Awareness Week, helping to break down communication barriers, promote inclusion and encourage better communication between deaf and hearing individuals. This year 3 Bourne Education Trust schools within our Epsom cluster - Auriol Junior School, The Mead Infant & Nursery School and Epsom and Ewell High School (all of which include resourced provision for deaf children) came together to mark this special week across a series of events including making a model ear out of scrap items.

Rebecca Williams, Headteacher at Auriol Junior School said; ‘It was wonderful for the 18 deaf children to all work together across the schools and we look forward to more events in the future. We were so impressed by the children's knowledge and understanding of the ear and how the ear works following their work in the deaf curriculum. The children also answered lots of questions in assemblies about their deafness and equipment. Watching the children discuss and learn about deafness together with genuine curiosity truly reflected the inclusive culture we are so proud of.’
