Celebrating International Women's Day

7th Mar 2025

As International Women's Day approaches, we are proud to share some of the great activities happening across our schools celebrating women in sports. Our students and staff have been involved in some inspiring initiatives promoting equal opportunities and encouraging young women to pursue their sporting ambitions. Through partnerships with national organisations and visits from sporting heroes, we're proud to be part of the growing movement to create more inclusive spaces in sports for women and girls.

Girls in Football - making their mark

Students at Pyrcroft Grange proudly wore their football kits to school in celebration of International Women's Day. Their participation caught the attention of Sky Sports, with presenter Vicky Gomersall featuring the school as part of the #HerGameToo campaign, an initiative dedicated to promoting gender equality and inclusivity in sport.

Meanwhile, Twickenham School made history as one of only two schools nationwide chosen to showcase the FA's Best Ever Football Session. Supported by the Barclays 'Game On' programme, our key stage 3 girls participated in training with England football legend Rachel Yankey, with Ian Wright also joining the event. Beyond practising their skills, students spoke with the FA press team and engaged in conversations with both sporting icons.

Building a national movement

The Best Ever Football Session represents a flagship day in the FA's calendar, designed to highlight that girls belong in football and to encourage participation across the country. After last year's record-breaking event involving 475,000 girls from 5,000 schools, this year's initiative aims to achieve even greater impact.

With Twickenham School serving as the London spotlight school (paired with another school in Manchester), our students have become ambassadors for this important national movement.

Recognition of excellence

The commitment to girls' football extends beyond these special events. Nonsuch Primary School, a BET associate, recently received the Barclays Equal Access School Award for their dedication to providing equal opportunities in girls' football. This recognition celebrates their ongoing work breaking barriers and empowering young female athletes both on and off the pitch.

Looking beyond a single day

These initiatives reflect our schools' commitment to gender equality in sports throughout the year, not just on International Women's Day. By creating environments where girls can confidently participate in traditionally male-dominated sports, we're helping to open doors for the next generation of female athletes.

Well done to all our students and staff who continue to champion this important cause.
